Abstract
A key emotion privileged by Hip hop is anger, usually conveyed by hyperbole. The explosive combination has incurred severe sanction from Spain’s judiciary for its socio-political critique and prejudiced due process against exponents and fans in the USA and UK. This article reasserts the aesthetic credentials of the genre, in terms of literary tradition, performance and affect. It is argued that the passion it generates, the cause of so much offence, must be understood within the exclusive realms of a creative convention as is intuited by its audience and acknowledged by the habit of art. The essay concludes that the attempt to isolate the medium from its environment in order to criminalise its adherents is a perversion of the course of creativity.
