4 • The States of the Predicand (aḥwāl-i musnad ilayh)

Abstract

This chapter, part of a series of eight, each of which addresses a different topic within the Persian science of meanings (ʿilm-i maʿānī), examines the ‘states of the predicand’ (aḥwāl-i musnad ilayh). It discusses general operations on nominals (occurrences, ellipses, definite/indefinite references, shifts in word order, appositions, and linkers etc.). The mechanisms by which a predicand takes on its most basic sense or more subtle secondary meanings are also explored. Examples, mainly from Persian poetry, are given as illustrations.
