Monograph | The Subtle Meaning
Chapter | 5 • The States of the Predicate (aḥwāl-i musnad)
Abstract
This chapter, part of a series of eight, each of which addresses a different topic within the Persian science of meanings (ʿilm-i maʿānī), examines the ‘states of the predicate’ (aḥwāl-i musnad). It considers how nominal and verbal predicates are affected by various operations (occurrence, ellipsis, definite/indefinite reference, shifts in word order), and how particular optional elements (quyūd) can restrict the scope of a predicate. In appropriate contexts, these mechanisms of manipulating utterances can convey secondary meanings beyond the literal value of the utterance. Examples, mainly from Persian poetry, are given as illustrations.
