Abstract

The correct framing and consequent assessment of a work as significant as John VI Cantacuzenus’s four Apologiae and four Orationes against Islam hinges fundamentally on the issue of its dating. The creation of an anti-Islamic corpus by a figure who guided the empire’s destiny during the troubled years of the second civil war (1341-47), repeatedly and confidently seeking assistance from neighboring Turkish emirates and establishing close personal relationships with them (Umur of Aydın and Orhan I), simply cannot be explained solely by a polemical, spontaneous urge or a superficial display of erudition.
