3 • Talking with Images, Talking about Images

Abstract

This chapter introduces the cultural climate in Renaissance Lyon and the evolution of the printing industry in the city during the sixteenth century. It presents in more detail the corpus of images collected, and it examines some prefaces in illustrated books to discuss the function of book illustrations. The third part takes into account the iconographic similarities and differences in the illustrated production of two of the most prolific artists of the time, Bernard Salomon and Pierre Eskrich.
