Abstract
La poesia e la condizione del dispatrio: la traduzione culturale e la (in)adattabilità is an edited volume arising from the international conference held at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice from 28 to 30 October 2024. The contributions examine contemporary poetry through the condition of foreignness in three interconnected dimensions: geographical displacement and migration; the estrangement inherent in poetic language; and the intellectual displacement associated with the poet’s position and the instability of poetry’s own identity. Drawing on works from different linguistic, cultural, and geopolitical contexts, with particular attention to Portuguese-language poetry, the volume approaches dispatrio as a critical category that goes beyond conventional notions of exile. It denotes an ongoing oscillation between languages, territories, temporalities, cultural systems, and forms of belonging. The essays address cultural and intersemiotic translation, Indigenous cosmopoetics, multilingualism, gender, migration, intermediality, the reconfiguration of literary traditions, and relations between human and non-human forms of life. Throughout the volume, poetry emerges as an expanded practice of translation capable of exposing asymmetries, challenging established identities, recovering erased knowledge, and interrogating the devices of power that regulate mobility, cultural legitimacy, and representation. Foreignness is thus understood not simply as an external condition but as a constitutive instability within language and subjectivity. Rather than reconciling differences, contemporary poetry intensifies tensions among spaces, times, bodies, and regimes of meaning, transforming permanent (in)adaptability into a source of aesthetic, ethical, and political experimentation.
