Research Article | Artists in North-Central Puglia Between the 11th and 13th Centuries
Abstract
Apulia, from the transition between Byzantine kingdom, Regnum Normannorum and Swabian-Angevin era, offers an interesting field of inquiry for the analysis of artistic production. In these region, artistic identities emerge from a simple craft contest as real artistic personalities whose productions, in some cases, transcend regional boundaries. The phenomenon of artists’ signature shows peculiarities in Apulia from the second half of the 11th century and continues in the following centuries, so we see artists which seal their productions, according to a new concept that recognizes the autonomy and the originality of artisans/artists and that allows us to capture the artistic evolution.
