Abstract
This chapter provides a glossary of key terms used in Persian textbooks on ʿilm-i maʿānī (literally, ‘the science of meanings’), one of the branches of the study of eloquence (balāġat) in the Islamic world. It discusses technical terms used to represent participants, utterances, speakers’ intentions, communicative situations, and contextual references. It also examines the general organisation of Persian textbooks, which are usually divided into eight parts.
