Abstract
This essay conveys the first reflections of a broader project on the representation of the mother and motherhood in modern Turkish literature. The transformations provoked in the patriarchal system by modernisation have created a new domesticity with new figures, roles, and concepts, such as childhood and youth, highlighting new emotional needs and feelings. The novel’s ‘discovery’ of the mother takes place at this historical juncture, attributing radically new functions to motherhood. The contribution will carry out the analysis by reading anthropological and historical studies as well as novels and autobiographies by significant authors from the period between 1860 and 1930.
