(Re)presentar el teatro clásico en el siglo XXI: retos de traducción, dramaturgia y accesibilidad
Abstract
This study provides an overview of the challenges involved in (re)translating and staging Spanish Golden age drama in the new millennium. From the usually false dichotomy between translating for the page vs. for the stage, to the role of dramaturgy and the different functions and agents involved. Finally, taking theatrical accessibility as a conjunction of textual and theatrical challenges, it examines the surtitles of two productions: El Perro del hortelano (Vega 2012), directed by Helena Pimenta in 2016; and The House of Desires (Los empeños de una casa) by sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, directed by Nancy Meckler and translated by Catherine Boyle in 2004.
