Abstract
Paraísos insoportables analyzes the mechanisms by which diverse cultural expressions critically respond to the excessive scale of tourism in 21st-century Mallorca. The volume explores the models of cultural contact triggered by the industry and the capacity of local culture to navigate its influence. By examining literary, theatrical, and audiovisual works, it maps a discourse on local identity where tourism functions as both a site of resistance and a pervasive ethos shaping islanders’ self-perception. Moving beyond simple reaction, these works occupy the space between rejection and promotion, fostering a nuanced dialogue on the conflicts and exchanges inherent in the modern tourist experience.
