Leopardi e gli angeli dell’immaginazione

Abstract

This essay examines the points for reflection offered by the mythical and religious figure of the Angel or daimon, conceived in the ancient ‘age of imagination’, which can be traced back to the poetic activity of the young Leopardi and, later, to the philosophical reflection developed in the Zibaldone. The notes related to the drafts of the Christian Hymns indicate a syncretistic development of the subject of biblical angels and classical daemons passed down by tradition, and an interpretative hypothesis in verse of such imaginary entities. The hymn should reveal, according to the final note, “all the poetry that superstition has in the matter of spirits and genies”.
