Abstract

From Cervantes’ three entremeses translated by Eugenio Montale for Elio Vittorini’s publishing operation (Teatro spagnolo, Bompiani, 1941), the translation strategies of verbal humour are analysed to compare them with the solutions of other translators (poets and philologists) of the twentieth century. The descriptive study of these metatexts will make it possible to evaluate, once the specific purpose of each translation has been identified, the criterion adopted and its suitability for the preservation of the comic effect, as well as the relationship with the historical and socio-cultural moment in which this peculiar form of cultural dissemination was carried out.
