Alma y vida (1902) by Benito Pérez Galdós: Contributions to its Consideration as a Modernist Drama
Abstract
This article focuses on the 1902 play Alma y vida by Benito Pérez Galdós. The main objective is to analyze the modernist features present in the play within a theoretical framework that views Modernismo as a cultural movement transcending “art for art’s sake”. The context of the play’s creation and staging, as well as the conception of Modernismo during the author’s time, is outlined. Additionally, the traces of this aesthetic in the author’s other works are examined. This allows us to consider Alma y vida as a modernist drama.
