Abstract
Six Armenian nouns involving the meaning of speaking (ban, bar˙, barbar˙, xawsk‘, zroyc‘ and patgam) are studied in order to pinpoint their uses and frequency in the Armenian version of the New Testament and in the historical writings of Agathangelos and Moses of Khoren. The aim of the research is to assess the distinctive semantic features of each noun in order to outline which elements of speaking (facets of the ‘parole’) Classical Armenian language singles out and encodes in its lexicon. The results point out the prominence of pragmatics features.
