Abstract

This text analyzes how speed and machines affect the lives of some Guarani communities in Paraguay and Brazil. It discusses the impact of machines, their proliferation and the accidents they generate, and how these can produce changes in the everyday exercise of power. It also describes machines introduced by development projects that end up being reused for other purposes or abandoned. Finally, it is posited that accidents and mechanical dysfunctions are not always seen as fortuitous events, but can be interpreted according to the social and political logics of these communities.
