Abstract

This article examines the transformations brought about by the first paved road in the Department of Alto Paraguay along the PY-15 route, inaugurated in February 2022. Through archives and field interviews, it shows how the paving of 275 km between Loma Plata and Carmelo Peralta reconfigured mobility in a region previously dominated by waterways and dirt roads. It also analyzes the flip side of this transformation, which, while accelerating the flow of capital and reorienting a border zone towards Paraguay, stimulated new forms of road accidents that have had a particularly strong impact on the Ayoreo population.
