Abstract

The article describes the dangerous work of indigenous workers in the maintenance of the train tracks of the Carlos Casado S.A. company in the Paraguayan Chaco, during the early twentieth century, and analyzes the consequent railway accidents as ‘non-events’. Considered as collateral effects of the modernity brought by the railroad, these accidents were not conceived as significant historical events, and remained as intimate memories without echo in the collective and institutional memory.
