Abstract

Through journalistic sources, the details of a fateful milestone in the history of the Chuquicamata mine are described and analyzed. On January 25, 1937, due to negligence and lack of foresight, a serious accident occurred with high human cost as a result of the explosion of 1400 bags of gunpowder and 88 bags with explosives. Considering the dense human drama that this accident meant, a paradoxical and beneficial instance for the company is evidenced, revealing the sacrificial aspect of mining capitalism in the Chilean peripheries.
