Abstract

Three widely reported mid-twentieth-century events on Easter Island are analyzed for their impact on the islanders. These include the shipwreck and death of Professor Lorenzo Baeza Vega, the accident of French adventurer Eric de Bisschop, and the stay of Norwegian archaeologist Thor Heyerdahl. It is proposed that accidents form a narrative—a sequence of events leading to tragedy. The media play a key role in shaping public perception, turning accidents into marketable stories that mobilize government agencies.
