1 • Language and Translation at the Safavid Court
Abstract
Knowledge of the local language or languages of the host country was important for early modern diplomats, in addition to the knowledge of the region and its customs. Knowledge of Turkish was particularly useful for European diplomats visiting the Safavid court where the Safavid shahs and courtiers conversed in that language.
