Abstract

The oral tradition of the Mixtec people of Oaxaca (Mexico) has a great diversity of stories that narrate accidents. These are often related to beliefs in owners, spirits or guardians of the land and mountains, who in moments of anger and rage cause harm and damage to people who offend them. This chapter explores precisely this indigenous perception of accidents, as well as the traditional protocols of prevention and the dynamics of their transmission through narration. The analysis is based on narratives obtained through interviews in the Mixtec language.
