Abstract

The reasons why the study of the manuscript conservation treatments in the past is of particular interest today are explored in this paper. Furthermore, the methodology necessary for a scientific investigation on the history of manuscript treatments is elucidated. Some characteristic cases at different places and institutions are examined and also the general features of the conservation treatments in the last five centuries are given.
