Gianclaudio Macchiarella e l’italiano negli Stati Uniti

Abstract

An important aspect of Gianclaudio Macchiarella's work is situated at the intersection of cultural promotion in a diplomatic context with the expansion of the institutional foundations for the promotion of Italian language and culture in the US. His work both as director and then as expert for the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in New York City was very varied, involving the support and promotion of events involving Italian culture in the Tri-State area (NY, NJ, CT). But his most innovative attempts were in Italian testing, as one institutional avenue to help the diffusion and preservation of Italian in the US: a very important element in creating equal opportunities and recognition for Italian in the entire educational system in the US. My focus will be on the aim of these efforts and on the original institutional network and testing delivery platforms that Prof. Macchiarella and I worked on to create an exam that was to be functionally equivalent to the AP (Advanced Placement) exam.
